What is it like dating a transgender woman?

I'm a trans woman who hasn’t had lower surgery, so dating straight men can feel uncomfortable because of my genitals. On dating apps, I often feel like I have to give a disclaimer and explain my situation every time. Dating men in the LGBTQ+ community feels safer and more comfortable. I once dated a bi-curious man, but I realized I was just his rebound. What are your thoughts or experiences?

I honestly love transgender women. In my experience, they have better personalities and are more understanding.

Being trans can mean different things, and you don’t have to fit every stereotype or “check every box” to be valid. Many trans people don’t take hormones, have surgery, or focus on passing. If someone says you’re not trans because you don’t match their idea of what a trans person should be, they’re being transphobic.

Cis people often focus too much on genitals, seeing them as the main thing that defines gender - men have penises, women have vaginas, and that’s it for them. This view is harmful and untrue. While gender and genitals can be connected, they are not the same. People can have any genitals and still be their true gender.

I’m a woman with a penis, and I’m fine with it. I don’t want a vagina. That doesn’t make me any less of a woman. I do plan to have an orchiectomy, but only to stop testosterone production - not because I dislike my penis.

Some trans people experience bottom dysphoria and want surgery, and that’s equally valid.

At the end of the day, people are just people.

Dating a trans woman can have some fun perks, such as:
  • No risk of unplanned pregnancy
  • She understands your love for sports
  • No PMS
  • She won’t be upset if you forget her birthday, because she might forget yours too
  • More openness to adventurous sex
  • If she hasn’t undergone vaginoplasty, you might experience the best of both worlds
  • She may understand you better because she’s seen life from a different perspective
But jokes aside, the real benefit is dating someone with incredible courage - someone who has transformed her life to become the woman she was always meant to be.
